{"id":3677,"date":"2017-08-16T12:58:56","date_gmt":"2017-08-16T10:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.direkt36.hu\/?p=3677"},"modified":"2022-10-11T23:13:34","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T21:13:34","slug":"tovabb-folyik-a-kozpenz-az-orban-csaladhoz-most-egy-allami-eromu-beruhazasan-dolgoznak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/direkt36.exot.hu\/en\/tovabb-folyik-a-kozpenz-az-orban-csaladhoz-most-egy-allami-eromu-beruhazasan-dolgoznak\/","title":{"rendered":"Public money keeps flowing to Orb\u00e1n\u2019s family: now they work on a state-owned power plant\u2019s project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of Hungary\u2019s oldest thermoelectric power plants, the Oroszl\u00e1ny Power Plant, stopped operating over a year ago, but when we visited its site on a hot July day, it did not seem abandoned at all. Trucks kept arriving to its entrance, most of them coming from the freight company of the prime minister\u2019s younger brother, \u00c1ron Orb\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<p>With logos of Neh\u00e9z K\u0151 Ltd. on their side, the trucks disappeared from sight not far away from a small hill, behind which there is a land rehabilitation work in progress. Worth nearly 2 billion forints (6.5 million euros), the project aims to return the land to its former state, after it was damaged by the power plant\u2019s activity. Part of the materials needed for the project are supplied from the mine of Orb\u00e1n Viktor\u2019s father, Gy\u0151z\u0151 Orb\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xzkn0GpWFTg\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The businesses owned by the members of the Orb\u00e1n family, dealing with mining, transportation and manufacturing of building materials, have shown a spectacular growth in recent years, reaching 4-5 billion forints (13-16 million euros) of revenue annually. Direkt36 has revealed in <a href=\"\/\/www.direkt36.hu\/en\/2017\/05\/09\/rejtett-allami-munkakbol-is-jott-penz-az-orban-csalad-gyorsan-szerzett-milliardjaihoz\/\">previous<\/a> <a href=\"\/\/www.direkt36.hu\/en\/2017\/05\/17\/ujabb-oriasi-allami-beruhazas-mogul-kerult-elo-orban-apjanak-cege\/\">articles <\/a>that the Orb\u00e1n companies\u2019 involvement in several state projects, including motorway, railway and sewerage system constructions, has contributed to their outstanding performance. The companies participated as suppliers in the projects, delivering building materials.<\/p>\n<p>In 2001, during his first term as a prime minister, Viktor Orb\u00e1n explicitly asked his father not to sell materials for large-scale state funded projects carried out that time. This June, Orb\u00e1n told Direkt36 that he still considers it important for his father not to participate in public investments. Orban\u2019s answers, at the same time, also suggests that he thinks \u2013 as opposed to his earlier statements \u2013 that if his father does not participate in the project as a main- or subcontractor but as their supplier, that is not problematic. He said this in spite of the fact that suppliers also receive public money, similar to higher level participants of state projects.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"\/\/www.direkt36.hu\/en\/crowdfunding-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We can only do this work if we have supporters.<br \/>\nBecome a supporting member now!<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The operator of the power plant and the companies that carry out its rehabilitation project refused to tell us how much money is paid to the Orb\u00e1n family\u2019s businesses. We also asked Dolomit Ltd. and Neh\u00e9z K\u0151 Ltd. about their involvement in the project, but they did not respond our questions either.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Six miners nearby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The power plant in Oroszl\u00e1ny \u2013 located an hour\u2019s drive from the capital Budapest \u2013 produced energy from the 1960s until the end of 2015, mainly using brown coal mined in the nearby mountains. The waste produced during its operation was disposed on an almost 200-hectare land next to the power plant. During the currently ongoing rehabilitation project this waste is mixed with materials deriving from mining activities, then new vegetation is planted on top of this covering layer.<\/p>\n<p>The operator of the power plant, the state-owned V\u00e9rtesi Er\u0151m\u0171 Ltd., is responsible for the closure of the landfill and for carrying out the rehabilitation of the land. The rehabilitation project was divided into various phases, and the main contractors were chosen via public procurement.<\/p>\n<p>The currently ongoing second phase of the project \u2013 won by a consortium of Terra-Log Ltd. and MENTO Ltd. &#8211; was launched in May. According to their publicly available contract, 34 hectares of land will be rehabilitated until the end of January 2018. For the covering layer, almost 250 thousand m3 of material \u2013 by-products of mining activity, humus soil and turf, for example \u2013 is planned to be delivered from other locations.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the May publication of our first article about the Orb\u00e1n family\u2019s involvement in state projects, we received a tip saying that the company of the PM\u2019s father participates in the power plant\u2019s rehabilitation project. V\u00e9rtesi Er\u0151m\u0171 Ltd. confirmed that Dolomit Ltd., majority-owned by the PM\u2019s father, delivers material for the rehabilitation project, from its mine located in G\u00e1nt, 30 kilometres from the plant. V\u00e9rtesi Er\u0151m\u0171 Ltd. did not answer our questions about the exact type, quantity and price of the materials supplied by the Orb\u00e1n-company.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-center\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/\/www.direkt36.hu\/leaks\/\">Do you have an important story?<br \/>\nShare it with us on secure channels!<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>When we visited the project site on the morning of 5 July, in an hour we saw more than ten trucks of Neh\u00e9z K\u0151 Ltd. arriving to the power plant\u2019s site. Neh\u00e9z K\u0151 Ltd., established by Viktor Orb\u00e1n&#8217;s father and two brothers , and currently solely owned by the PM\u2019s younger brother \u00c1ron, has also produced spectacular growth in recent years. The cargo of the trucks could not be seen, but sources familiar with the project \u2013 who asked for anonymity \u2013 told Direkt36 that Neh\u00e9z K\u0151 Ltd. delivers Dolomit Ltd.\u2019s crushed stone for the rehabilitation project.<\/p>\n<p>V\u00e9rtesi Er\u0151m\u0171 said that besides Dolomit Ltd., five other companies supply material for the covering layer used for the rehabilitation. \u201cFor the sake of security supply, the materials are delivered from 6 mines that are logistically and economically advantageous,\u201d V\u00e9rtesi Er\u0151m\u0171 Ltd. told Direkt36.<\/p>\n<p>Among the five companies named as suppliers, only one confirmed over the phone to Direkt36 that it indeed participates in the rehabilitation project, while two companies did not want to answer our question. Two companies said that, as opposed to the information given by V\u00e9rtesi Er\u0151m\u0171 Ltd., they have not delivered materials for the covering layer used for the rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p>We asked V\u00e9rtesi Er\u0151m\u0171 Ltd. to clarify this contradiction, but it did not respond to our questions. The company originally planned to spend net 1.37 billion forints (4.5 million euros) on the project, but eventually the full cost increased to net 1.99 billion forints (6.5 million euros), equalling gross 2.52 billion forints (82.5 million euros).<\/p>\n<p>We wanted to know how much money the PM\u2019s father receives for supplying materials for the project. However, neither the suppliers, subcontractors and main contractors, nor V\u00e9rtesi Er\u0151m\u0171 replied.<\/p>\n<p><em>For the Hungarian company data we used the services of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opten.hu\/\">Opten<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceginfo.hu\/\">C\u00e9ginfo<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The businesses of the Hungarian PM&#8217;s family have participated in several public projects in recent years.
