{"id":5682,"date":"2019-07-18T12:25:20","date_gmt":"2019-07-18T10:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.direkt36.hu\/?p=5682"},"modified":"2022-10-11T22:49:49","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T20:49:49","slug":"igy-lett-nyeresegesebb-az-orban-banya-mint-barmelyik-komoly-versenytarsa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/direkt36.exot.hu\/en\/igy-lett-nyeresegesebb-az-orban-banya-mint-barmelyik-komoly-versenytarsa\/","title":{"rendered":"This is how the mining company of Viktor Orban\u2019s father became more profitable than its major competitors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year, the mining company of Gy\u0151z\u0151 Orb\u00e1n, the father of Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n, reached the top.<\/p>\n<p>Dolomit Ltd. has been one of the most successful companies in the market for many years, but in 2018 it outperformed all of its major competitors in one important aspect: Gy\u0151z\u0151 Orb\u00e1n&#8217;s company achieved the highest profit margin.<\/p>\n<p>The profit margin shows how much profit the company made in relation to sales.<\/p>\n<p>Dolomit Ltd., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.direkt36.hu\/en\/rejtett-allami-munkakbol-is-jott-penz-az-orban-csalad-gyorsan-szerzett-milliardjaihoz\/\">which has been involved in several major public construction projects in recent years<\/a>, generated a profit of HUF 1.9 billion (EUR 5.84 million) in 2018 with a turnover of HUF 4.6 billion (EUR 14.7 million). This represents a 41,3 percent profit margin, which is outstanding not only in the company&#8217;s history but in the entire market \u2013 more than the double of the market average of 18.8 percent last year.<\/p>\n<p>In our analysis, we compared the performance of Dolomit Ltd. with those companies that carry out the same activities (quarrying, plaster and chalk mining). There are currently 65 such companies in the market.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.direkt36.hu\/contents\/Dolomit\/index_eng.html\" width=\"100%\" height=\"440\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Out of these, Dolomit Ltd. was the most successful Hungarian company in terms of sales and after-tax profits last year, with only a few foreign-owned companies having been able to outperform it. In terms of sales, two French and one Austrian performed better, and when it comes to profits, only the French-owned Colas \u00c9szakk\u0151 Ltd. could generate more than Gy\u0151z\u0151 Orb\u00e1n\u2019s mining company.<\/p>\n<div class=\"felhivas\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.direkt36.hu\/en\/tamogass-minket\/\">We can only do this work if we have supporters. Become a supporting member now!<\/a><\/div>\n<p>In terms of profit margin, not even these foreign companies could beat Dolomit Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>French-owned Saint-Gobain Construction Products Hungary Ltd., which has had the largest revenue in the industry for years, could achieve only a 4,2-percent profit margin in 2018, compared to 41 percent at Dolomit. Out of a total of 29 companies with a significant turnover (at least HUF 5 million or EUR 15 300), only three other companies were able to achieve a profit margin of over 30 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Direkt36\u2019s analysis shows that the profit margin of Dolomit Ltd. has always been above the market average over the last ten years. 2018 was the first year, however, when the company achieved a better ratio than its larger competitors.<\/p>\n<p>We asked Dolomit Ltd. to explain this outstanding performance, but the company did not respond to our request. Viktor Orban\u2019s press officer, Bertalan Havasi, responded to our questions with a familiar comment: \u201cThe prime minister does not deal with business questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of the major companies in the industry did not want to comment on Dolomit\u2019s results because of the &#8220;political nature&#8221; of the topic. Two CEOs agreed to talk but only on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201eThis can only be achieved in a controlled manner [of tendering procedures]. If Ferenc Gyurcs\u00e1ny [former socialist PM of Hungary] led this company, its results would be a lot more modest,\u201d one of them commented on the profit margin of Dolomit Ltd. Another CEO of a company with turnover above HUF 100 million (EUR 307 thousand) said that the market has a big influence of the potential profit margin of companies. \u201eCurrently there are big road constructions, the demand is a lot higher. It doubled compared to 2016-2017, and its effects can still be felt this year,\u201d he said. When we asked about the profit margin of Dolomit Ltd., the CEO first reacted with a laughter: \u201eIs this the company of the Orb\u00e1ns? Then there\u2019s no need to explain, it\u2019s another type of system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then the CEO added that Dolomit Ltd. \u201cstill works on a market basis\u201d, their products\u2019 quality and the company\u2019s productivity can contribute to its good performance. \u201cThey have good stones, they are capable of meeting huge demands, there is never a shortage at their company.\u201d The CEO also highlighted that Dolomit Ltd.\u2019s production has been mechanized to a great extent. At the company, for example, stones are screened with an electric screening system. This equipment is a huge investment, but, on the long run, it is more profitable than diesel machines, thus contributing to higher profit margins.<\/p>\n<p>Besides Dolomit Ltd., other companies owned by the Orb\u00e1n family also started to show spectacular growth as of 2014. Earlier, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.direkt36.hu\/en\/category\/az-orban-csalad-uzletei\/\">Direkt36 published a series of articles<\/a> about how EU-funded public projects secretly contribute to the spectacular performance of the Orb\u00e1n-companies.\u00a0Many of these projects were won by companies and business partners of Lorinc Meszaros, a friend of the PM and a former gas fitter, who has become one of the country\u2019s richest people, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.direkt36.hu\/en\/igy-folyik-tovabb-a-kozpenz-meszaros-lorinctol-az-orban-csaladhoz\/\">while the companies of the Orb\u00e1n family supplied building materials for these projects.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Earlier, several sources familiar with the projects told Direkt36 that Dolomit Ltd. was chosen as a supplier in spite of the fact that its products are much more expensive than those of its competitors. An employee of a company which oversaw one of the sewage projects said that the prices of Dolomit Ltd.\u2019s products could be as much as 30 percent higher than those of competing suppliers, although he added that Dolomit Ltd.\u2019s products were of higher quality.<\/p>\n<p>An employee of one of Dolomit Ltd.\u2019s competitors also confirmed that Gy\u0151z\u0151 Orb\u00e1n\u2019s products are of good quality.
